July Message from the Lay DirectorsPerspective As we are writing thei article we are a couple weeks past the unofficial start of summer and so far we have only seen three 80 degree plus days. We have not had many nice evenings sitting on the deck or porch. The flowers all seem stunted in their growth. And if outdoor baseball were here this year we would have had a lot of games cancelled. "Will summer ever get here?" is a question heard many times so far this season. But in asking that question we my be missing the joys and blessings of an extended spring season. The evenings we have enjoyed on the deck and porch did not find us swatting bugs or covered in sweat. The labor involved in planting those stunted-growth flowers did not lead to heat exhaustion. The cooler weather has kept the air conditioner off and the windows open making for great sleeping weather. The rain has kept the sprinklers off. And, if we had outdoor baseball, we would be experiencing something we have not seen in these parts since the Met Stadium days, doubleheaders. SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR’S REFLECTIONS One of the things that I know about my vacation is that I will find someplace to go and celebrate Mass on Tuesday, June 3. thirty years ago on that day, Archbishop John Roach ordained me a Presbyter. For half my lifetime, I have been a priest. This is always a time of remembering and reflecting for me, as I try to learn the lessons of my life so far and look forward to (I hope) many more years of ministry. The four parishes I served were all important in my life. St. Margaret Mary in Golden Valley was my first assignment, where I spent at least half of my time ministering as a Hospital Chaplain at North Memorial Hospital. I was only there for a year and a half, but both the parish and the hospital gave me a great grounding in ministry and not only gave me many stories to draw on down to this day that help to illustrate the Gospel, but also a very clear sense that my purpose in life was to be of service to the People of God.
