We are challenged...

The Cursillo is an encounter with Christ.  It  promotes a spiritual revitalization of our world.  By living a fully Christian life, we bring Christ to others, including members of our family, school, workplace, etc.  Cursillo develops a consciousness that we are called to be leaders.

History and purpose of Cursillo...

The full name of Cursillo is Cursillo de Cristiandad.  The word "cursillo" means short  course.  The full name translates into English as "a short course in Christian living."

Cursillo, which started in Majorca, Spain in the 1940's, is a movement within the Catholic  Church.  The founders were dedicated to helping Catholics know Christ better.  The intention, then and now, is to give participants a renewed spirituality and a clearer understanding of how Christ can work through them to change the environments in which they live.

The Cursillo Movement came to the United States in 1957.  That first weekend was held in Texas and was conducted in Spanish.

The Cursillo Movement and its method are endorsed and highly encouraged by the Catholic Church.

Please  join us in developing a deeper personal relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

It begins with a weekend...

The Cursillo Movement is introduced over a consecutive seventy-two hour period called a "Three Day Weekend."  During the three day weekend, which begins Thursday evening and ends Sunday evening, a team of religious and lay personnel present a series of talks to the candidates and the entire group calls upon the Holy Spirit for enlightenment and guidance.  The team and candidates live as a small Christian community over the weekend and discuss these talks in small groups.  The discussions provide an opportunity for to share insights about the presentations and hear how others received that same presentation.  The talks and discussions cover a variety of topics including:

bullet

the lay person's role within the Church

bullet

meaning of grace and sacraments

bullet

importance of prayer and the study of God

bullet

Christian  leadership and living Christianity in community

bullet

our call to bring Christ to others and transform the very environments in which we live

bullet

the importance of supporting one another in our efforts to live a truly Christian life

Throughout the weekend the participants will pray together, attend daily mass and have an opportunity to receive the sacrament of reconciliation.

Typically, by the end of the weekend, candidates have a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and a better understanding of the power of the Holy Spirit.  Also, candidates leave the weekend knowing that they have been called to spread the Word of God.

If you want to participate...

To attend a Cursillo weekend, you  must have a sponsor who is an active  Cursillista.  Your sponsor is responsible for preparing you for the weekend, establishing you in a group reunion where you work or live and introducing you to the Ultreya in your area.

Since the sacraments are important parts of the Catholic Cursillo experience, members of other faiths are encouraged to attend a similar program of their own denomination.  Although separate weekends are held for men and women, if you are  married, it is  necessary for both you and your spouse to participate.  Due to the  intensity of the weekend, those recently divorced, grieving the loss of a loved one, or  hurting for whatever reason should wait for a less stressful time before applying.
